In mid March the 5th grade students started planting seeds in the greenhouse at Bonner School. It is a tradition, spanning the past 8 years, give or take.
With the help of their teachers, the 5th graders begin with seeds, which grow to sprouts, and after much time and dedication, soon have seedlings to plant in our school garden. This year many classes also helped plant starts, including the tiniest lumberjacks, the TK classes.
Not only do the students, and teachers plant. They work, prepping the garden for a new season by cleaning, weeding, and fine-tuning the garden’s watering system.
This is a collaborative garden, each class giving a little love as they can, sharing the work and responsibilities. Kids in grades TK-8th have all helped at some point with the garden, which makes it an extra special place.
Finally today, in preparation for summer, some of those same TK students in Mrs. C’s class, and their 5th grade garden buddies in Mr. Hudson’s class had the pleasure of planting the garden. Thanks to the hard work in the spring, they had plenty of corn and squash to plant in the garden. In addition to some generous donations from local greenhouses, Pink Grizzly, Clinton Farms, and Ace Garden Place, the garden is decked out with tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, cucumbers, onions, and more! We also have sunflowers, perennial herbs, and berries growing in the garden!
The kids are proud of their hard work and cannot wait to see the garden if they come to visit the playground in the summer, and when it’s time to harvest this fall!
